Sterling silver naturally oxidizes over time. Moisture, lotion, perfume and perspiration can also lead to tarnishing and buildup on jewelry. To avoid this jewelry should be washed with a soft bristled tooth brush and a small amount of mild dish soap and warm water every once in a while. Remove your jewelry before showering, swimming, using strong chemicals, applying lotions, makeup, or any other activities where the jewelry may be at risk of being damaged. Keep your piece in covered jewelry box to keep oxygen at bay.

Gold plating will eventually tarnish with time and wear. Avoid wearing gold plated jewelry with other pieces as scratches will cause the gold plating layer to wear away faster.
